A dramatic opening four minutes when Chilcompton Sports scored twice paved the way for their ultimately comfortable 4-0 victory away to Timsbury Athletic in the Uhlsport Somerset County League Cup competition. The home side remained in the contest against a side who showed why they are leading the way in the league but two late goals decided the contest.
The Timsbury defence was all at sea as the visitors stamped their authority on the match with a lightning start to the game. First Kyle Wych shot past Ashton Tucker in the home goal after just two minutes and soon after Jacob Brooks-Scully added a second courtesy of a deflection. The stunned home side eventually settled down and efforts from Sam Gregory and Ellis Hancock were just too high and Chilcompton keeper Frankie Phillips saved well from Rico Sobers.
At the other end Chilcompton captain Ryan Gay was also too high and Alfie Dix shot wide with a speculative effort. Chris Midgley created Timsbury’s best chance with a fine ball through to Rhys Cook but he was denied by the advancing Phillips. Close to the interval Gay shot wide for the visitors and Wych came close to his second goal only to see the ball float past the post.
Early in the second half Ryan Allen twice came close for Chilcompton but his first effort was held by Tucker and the second was just too high. A Jack Nix free-kick created a chance at the other end but Hancock’s header was deflected for a fruitless corner. Sobers then created a clear opening for Gregory but he lost his footing at the crucial moment and Chilcompton survived.
The game was essentially put to bed with 20 minutes left. Louie Gurner showed good control before firing past Tucker for the visitors’ third goal. The same player almost added another goal soon after but he shot too high although he was not to be denied with five minutes left hammering home the best goal of the match. It was reward for a side who played an attractive brand of football in an entertaining game in front of a large crowd.
