Industrial Past

Last updated: 15/03/2026

RETURN TO HISTORY MAIN MENU

Timsbury has a varied industrial past but mainly it was dominated by the primary industries of agriculture and coal mining. You can see examples of secondary industry (manufacture) and tertiary industry (services) by visiting The Old Shops of Timsbury which has the locations of many small scale enterprises that existed in the past.As you walk around the parish you can see indications of its mining past: the Miner’s Memorial Garden, the Upper Conygre, Lower Conygre and Withy Mills batches (spoil heaps) and the remains of the Somerset Coal Canal in the Cam valley. The book Twenty Walks In and Around Timsbury (details can be found at Walks & Books) takes you on routes that highlight many of the features of Timsbury’s industrial past.
